Coach McKinstry appointed Head Coach of Gor Mahia FC

Coach McKinstry has been appointed Head Coach of Kenyan giants Gor Mahia FC (29 July 2022).

Gor Mahia are the most successful club side in Kenya - having won the Kenyan Premier League a record 19 times, as well as the FKF Cup a record 11 times.

One of the most storied clubs in Africa, Gor Mahia are the only side from East Africa to have claimed a continental title when they were crowned champions of the CAF Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987, whilst also finishing runner-up in the same competition in 1979 and reaching the Quarter Finals of the CAF Champions League (1969, 1992) and CAF Confederations Cup (2018-19) respectively.

Currently ranked 41st in the African Club Rankings by CAF, Gor Mahia dominated Kenyan football between 2013 and 2020, winning 7 out of 8 Premier League titles.

However, the past 2 seasons have seen them drop below their usual high standards finishing 8th and 3rd respectively.

It is with that in mind that Gor Mahia have appointed Coach Johnathan McKinstry to seek to return the club to the summit of Kenyan football, and to once again to make their presence felt on the continental stage.

Speaking on the announcement of his appointment, Coach McKinstry commented:

“The opportunity to lead Gor Mahia is something that has interested me for several years - ever since I first visited the club in 2016 whilst Head Coach of Rwanda.  The stature of the club, combined with its significant and passionate fanbase place them as one of the leading clubs on the continent.  To be trusted with the responsibility of guiding them back to success is a task that I relish”

“There can be no doubt that the last couple of years will have been deeply frustrating for everyone associated with the club, as results have not matched the expectations of this great club. We will be doing everything within our power to rectify that not only for this season, but also to lay strong foundations that will allow for the return of a sustained period of success in the club’s history.”
